The art conveys discernable emotions via the animals’ facial expressions, and helps readers empathize with the lions as they travel swiftly through a warzone. Humans are rarely present when they appear in the story, their faces are never seen, leaving the story’s focus on the animals. Henrichon renders the characters and settings in lavish detail, with each of the animal characters having a distinctive look.
The lions also discover the cruelty of humans, and they have a fierce confrontation with a frightening bear named Fajer. The lions have to survive shelling and tanks indifferent to their presence, and search for food. The invasion destroys the zoo and sets the lions free in the city the animals struggle to comprehend what is happening. Published in 2006 by DC Comics, Pride of Baghdad explores the 2003 American-led invasion of Iraq from the perspective of a pride of lions held at the Baghdad Zoo: Zill, the male leader of the pride, possesses a calm, sentimental demeanor that belies his ferocity Safa is an old, scarred lioness with a cynical disposition shaped by her years in the wild Noor is a young lioness who dreams of escaping the zoo and returning to a wild freedom she barely remembers and Ali, Noor’s male cub, was born in captivity and has no understanding of life outside the zoo. Although the wartime dangers for animals are often little considered, this recurring, tragic aspect of war has been highlighted previously in the acclaimed graphic novel Pride of Baghdad by writer Brian K. A less noted impact is the number of animals caught in the crossfire, with thousands of animals at risk. Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine has been calamitous, displacing millions of Ukrainians and killing thousands on both sides of the conflict.
